The Sportmaster group of companies, the largest retailer of sporting goods in the Russian market in terms of revenue, is starting to expand into small towns with a new format. According to RBC, from 2022 the company will actively open stores in cities with a population of less than 100,000 people. The concept of the new format is currently being developed. It is known that the stores will operate within the framework of the retailer's omnichannel development strategy. Stores will open in the format from 300 to 500 square meters. For comparison, the area of ​​classic Sportmaster hypermarkets is up to 5000 square meters, and supermarkets – about 1500-2500 sq.m. The assortment in mini-format stores is formed from the most popular products. To date, the first retail outlets of the new format have been launched in the Leningrad and Vladimir regions and in the Stavropol Territory. The company recognized the work of new stores as successful and continued to refine the format. Sportmaster notes that for development they are considering the possibility of opening in approximately 300 small towns. Earlier it was reported that by the end of 2022, the network will grow by 50 stores, including 30 mini-formats. According to Mikhail Burmistrov, general director of the Infoline-Analytics agency, investments in the opening of one such store will amount to about 5 million rubles. As of the first quarter of 2022, Sportmaster manages more than 450 stores located in 220 Russian cities.
