Steam stats show how much the player base has shrunk since the release of Cyberpunk 2077

With the exception of No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best examples of a modern game that could make a difference. Despite being one of the most disastrous releases in recent video game history, CD Projekt Red has been hard at work fixing the issues. Many will agree that a lot has been improved since December 2020, although it's interesting to note that the player base is far from what it was almost 18 months ago.

According to statistics from SteamDB, a third-party website that tracks everything related to the Steam client, the number of users who play Cyberpunk 2077 has dropped significantly over the past year and a half. It is currently showing a recent 24-hour peak of just 19,789 players. When the game first came out, it had a peak of 1,054,388, no doubt inspired by its marketing campaign and years of anticipation, making it the fifth biggest Steam game in terms of concurrent users.

While the reputation is constantly improving, these numbers show that the concurrent player base has dwindled by about 98% since the game's release. The monthly breakdown shows that this number is not improving. However, there was a huge 113% jump in February when patch 1.5 was released. This major update brings many improvements and fixes. This shows that when the patch came out, the fans were ready to give the game another go.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like many people are interested in the game these days. While 19,000 players is still a lot, it's a yawning chasm compared to a million at launch.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on an expansion that should be out next year. But it's unlikely the game will ever reach the concurrent player count it briefly enjoyed at the end of 2020.
